Turning enthusiastic novices into safe and confident kiteboarders since 2000

LESSONS

ALL LEVELS WELCOME

LEVEL 01

BEGINNER

Your first lesson covers all of the basics: reading the wind, evaluating a kite spot for safety, gear setup and kite safety, and how to fly a kite. You will learn about the “wind window” and how to generate power with the kite.  Next, you’ll get out on the water for your first body-drags, which teaches you about generating power and will be the skill you use to recover a board that’s come off while riding. And through all of this, you will be practicing relaunching a kite that has crashed on the water.  You’ll have all your basics and be ready to introduce the board!

LEVEL 02

INTERMEDIATE

A lot of riders land here — including students who first learned with us years ago and are coming back, or students who have taken lessons elsewhere and are restarting their training. If needed, we will begin with a quick refresher of our beginner lesson, but if not, we will setup gear and jump into the water. You’ll lock in body-dragging, board recovery, kite relaunches, and flying the kite one-handed. From there it’s water starts, downwind and upwind riding, and the breakthrough every student is chasing: riding upwind. Every rider arrives at a different point, so we shape the session around where you actually are.

LEVEL 03

ADVANCED

You can ride. Now you want to ride like a pro. The Advanced Lesson is a coached session built around what you actually want to work on — transitions, toe-side riding, supervised free-riding, mastering jumping and developing tricks. Radio helmets let your instructor coach you through the move from the chase boat in real time, so you can attempt something new under close supervision. More often than not, your instructor will ride with you and show you first-hand how to perform whatever skill or trick you’re working on.

CANCELLATION POLICY

We recognize that plans change but we are happy to reschedule or cancel as long as we have more than 24 hours notice. If a student cancels with too little notice, that’s a time we’re unable to give to someone else. A 50% deposit of the total is required to reserve a lesson. Canceling within 24 hours of the lesson time will forfeit the deposit. Should the student cancel on lesson day, 100 percent of the lesson will be charged. No credit is given for late arrivals but if possible, we will accommodate. All of our lessons are booked back-to-back so that may sometimes be difficult.

We teach at Napeague, a saltwater harbor on the South Fork of Long Island, New York, east of Amagansett. The Napeague Stretch — the thin slip of land connecting Montauk to the rest of the island — funnels smooth, steady wind across the water. Waist-deep for hundreds of yards from shore, Napeague is ideal for learning. Most lessons take place at Lazy Point on the western side. A short drive south puts you on White Sands, one of the best kitesurfing beaches on the South Fork.

OUR STORY

SkyWalk is the longest running kiteboarding school in the Northeast — from Hatteras to Maine, no one has been at it longer. We learned this sport before there were schools to go to, and for over twenty-five years we have been at the leading edge, turning enthusiastic novices into safe and confident kiteboarders. We know these waters, these winds, and this stretch of the New York South Fork better than anyone. Come ride with us.
